The 16th-century tea master Furuta Oribe faithfully followed the teachings of Sen no Rikyū, "Do what others do not," creating a bold and free-spirited atmosphere that introduced a new sense of beauty into the world of tea. Oribe ware, characterized by deep green and black designs, remains modern even today. As praised in the Sōtan Nikki (Sōtan's Diary) as “Seto tea bowl, it's an exquisite thing,” Oribe’s nickname, "Hyouge-mono" (eccentric person), has become widely known.
